Liquid Immersion Cooling Data Center

Technical principle of liquid immersion cooling data center

Immersion liquid cooling technology is a method to achieve efficient heat dissipation by fully immersing the servers and other equipment in the data center in a non-conductive cooling liquid, using the conduction and convection characteristics of the liquid to heat. Compared with traditional air cooling methods, liquid cooling technology has higher thermal conductivity and lower thermal resistance. In an immersion liquid cooling system, the cooling liquid directly contacts the surface of electronic components, absorbs and carries away heat, thereby achieving effective cooling. The coolant is circulated through the system, where it transfers heat to an external condenser before being sent back to the data center. This method does not require additional air conditioning equipment, greatly reducing the overall energy consumption of the data center.

Advantages of liquid immersion cooling data center

Compared with air cooling, immersion liquid cooling technology has obvious advantages in heat dissipation efficiency. Because the thermal conductivity of liquid is much higher than that of air, immersion liquid cooling systems can more effectively conduct heat away from electronic equipment. According to research, the power utilization efficiency (PUE) of an immersion liquid-cooled data center can be reduced to 1.03 to 1.1, which is far lower than the 1.5 to 1.8 of a traditional air-cooled data center. This means that submerged liquid-cooled data centers can save up to 40% in electricity consumption. From an environmental point of view, immersion liquid cooling technology helps to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and reduce the global greenhouse effect.

The immersion liquid cooling technology can effectively improve the temperature environment inside the data center and keep the equipment running at a stable working temperature. This helps to reduce thermal stress and thermal fatigue of the equipment due to temperature fluctuations, thereby extending the service life of the equipment. Studies show that data center equipment with immersion liquid cooling lasts more than 30 percent longer than traditional air-cooled equipment. In the long run, this will help reduce equipment update and maintenance costs in the data center and increase the return on equipment investment.

Immersive liquid-cooled data centers are designed in such a way that space requirements can be drastically reduced. Since the liquid cooling system does not rely on traditional air conditioning equipment, the space utilization rate of the data center has been greatly improved. At the same time, the immersion liquid cooling system has good scalability and can easily increase or decrease modules to meet the needs of data centers of different sizes. In general, immersion liquid cooling data centers save about 30% in space utilization compared with traditional data centers.
