Chiller 24 kw – Water Chillers
You need to know the parts of a 24 kw chiller to understand how it works. Refrigerants, compressors, evaporators and condensers play a vital role in transferring heat away from the injection molding and bringing cooling liquid back into the injection molding.
24 kw chiller refrigerant
The first step in any chiller starts with the refrigerant. This chemical retains more heat than water, which allows for more efficient cooling. Coolant readily changes state from liquid to gas when heated. When the refrigerant cools, it condenses back into the liquid. Switching between these states and from high pressure to low pressure allows the coolant to cool the air or water used for injection molding.
While the refrigerant is at the heart of the 24 kw chiller, it may not be the fluid that runs through the process chiller coils to cool anodizing or metal plating liquids or food storage. Usually water or glycol is used in the chiller coil to cool the fluid in the tank. Regulating the tank temperature can be very difficult if the refrigerant is passed directly through the tank coil. In order to lower the temperature of glycol or water, an industrial glycol chiller is needed to cool and circulate the whole system of propylene glycol.
Parts of 24 kw chiller
A 24 kw chiller system has three main components – compressor, evaporator and condenser. Each changes the state or pressure of the refrigerant in cooling injection molding:
Evaporator: The heated refrigerant absorbs the heat of compression in the compressor, cools in the condenser, and then passes through the expansion valve metering device to become low temperature and low pressure. It then goes into the evaporator and immediately starts boiling as the injection molding medium cools. Heat from operation in the evaporator warms the coolant until it becomes a gas. Being a low pressure gas, it needs to be raised in pressure, which is where the compressor comes into play.
Compressor: The pressure of the gas increases after passing through the compressor, and the compressor physically compresses the gas to increase its pressure without changing its state. Now, the hot pressurized gas needs to release heat in the condenser.
Condenser: The condenser can be air-cooled or water-cooled. Air-cooled models use ambient air to remove heat from the refrigerant. Water cooling uses water cooling towers to store water to cool the refrigerant through evaporation. The purpose of the condenser is to remove the heat of compression from the compressor. After giving off heat, the refrigerant condenses into a high-pressure liquid, which then returns to the evaporator or enters the injection molding.
There are two types of systems for 24 kw chiller: open loop system and closed loop system. Open loop systems expose water to cooling towers or large storage tanks. This elemental exposure introduces contaminants into the system. Closed loop systems allow fluid to flow through the pipes in a sealed system with less chance of contamination. Closed loop systems are better suited for smaller applications, while open loop designs are best suited for large tonnage chiller systems.
