Natural refrigerants are substances used as refrigerants in refrigeration systems. They are alternatives to synthetic refrigerants such as chlorofluorocarbon (CFC), hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) and fluorocarbon (HFC)-based refrigerants. Unlike other refrigerants, natural refrigerants are non-synthetic and can be found in nature. The most prominent of these include various natural hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, ammonia and water. Natural refrigerants are preferable to synthetic refrigerants because they are more sustainable. With currently available technologies, nearly 75% of the potential in the refrigeration and air conditioning sector can be converted into natural refrigerants.

Synthetic refrigerants have been used in refrigeration systems since the creation of CFCs and HCFCs in 1929. When these refrigerants leak out of the system and into the atmosphere, they can adversely affect the ozone layer and global warming. CFC refrigerants contain carbon, fluorine and chlorine and become an important source of inorganic chlorine after photolysis by ultraviolet radiation in the stratosphere. The chlorine released also becomes active in destroying the ozone layer. HCFC has a shorter atmospheric life than CFC due to the addition of hydrogen, but its chlorine element will still have an adverse impact on the environment. Hydrofluorocarbons do not contain chlorine and have short atmospheric lifetimes, but they still absorb infrared radiation and their fluorine element contributes to greenhouse gases.
